Near North: A Brief History

Tagged: Near North, Old Highland area, History, City of Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minneapolis,

Like many other communities in Minneapolis, when the street cars stretched outward in the 1880s, development in Near North followed. The Old Highland area started to develop housing in the 1880s with the majority of the original housing stock developed by the time the 1920s. Most of the homes were larger and established by downtown merchants.

In the last 40 years, the community has appreciated lots of diversity, as an excessive amount of drastic change that has taken place recently. Such change includes the Jewish immigration to the suburbs in the 1970’s, a significant increase of Hmong in the 1980’s, an eruption of Liberian and Somali locals in the 1990’s, and a large increase of Mexicans in the 2000’s.
